teams nominated for the award in 2004, an indication that
the participants understand what the carnival is all about.

The "Paddy O'Brien" Award for
carnival referees was shared by Ian McGahey
and Nathan Shute and the inaugural Trans-Tasman
Challenge between Australia and New Zealand was won
by the Kiwi teams, 57-43.

The 2004 Canterbury Gold Coast Rugby Carnival "Barbarians"
(players selected by their own teams as the ones who contributed
the most to a successful carnival) were each presented with
a specially commissioned Canterbury jersey bearing the number
12, signifying it was awarded at the 12th annual carnival.
