  2004 Event News
Over 50 teams took part in the 2004 carnival, with the major award - the Goldstein's Bakery "Spirit of Rugby" trophy - being shared by Dilworth School from Auckland, New Zealand and St Brendans College, Yeppoon in Queensland.

Organisers were delighted at the large number of teams nominated for the award in 2004, an indication that the participants understand what the carnival is all about.

The divisional trophy winners were:

Under 15 Grey Division - Cranbrook High School NSW (def Trinity Lutheran College Qld 18-16 final)
Under 15 Yellow - Manuwera High School NZ (def South Coast schools Qld 29-11 in final)
Under 16 Purple - Trinity Grammar (NSW) (topped pool unbeaten)
Under 16 White - Hamilton Boys High (NZ) (def The Southport School Qld 19-17 in final)
Open Blue Division - Final tied 6-6 with The Armidale School (NSW) & Christ College (NZ) 2nd XV
Open Red Division - Trinity Grammar (NSW) (beat Te Aroha College NZ 41-6 in final)
Open Green Division - Shirley Boys High NZ (beat NSW Country U17 12-3 in final)

The "Paddy O'Brien" Award for carnival referees was shared by Ian McGahey and Nathan Shute and the inaugural Trans-Tasman Challenge between Australia and New Zealand was won by the Kiwi teams, 57-43.

The 2004 Canterbury Gold Coast Rugby Carnival "Barbarians" (players selected by their own teams as the ones who contributed the most to a successful carnival) were each presented with a specially commissioned Canterbury jersey bearing the number 12, signifying it was awarded at the 12th annual carnival.

There's a full list of Barbarians on this page.

Carnival chairman Barry Honan has also assembled a range of photos from the Carnival in his online album.
