The
Tens Festival that is held annually on the Sunday before the
Canterbury Gold Coast Rugby Carnival (5th July in 2009) is
a one day, 10-a-side Rugby competition open to school and
club teams from around the world.
As
for the Canterbury Gold Coast Rugby Carnival that follows,
teams
participate
in each of the divisions U18, U16 and U15 (if sufficient U15
teams apply)
The
Tens is normally held as a warm-up event for overseas teams
coming for the popular Canterbury
Gold Coast Rugby Carnival, however teams are welcome to
enter only the Tens if they wish.
In 2006 and 2007 the
Tens Festival was held on the Sunshine Coast at Central Park
Caloundra (formerly Camp Wallaby) and the Festival was promoted
as The Sunshine Coast Tens Festival (SCTF). The Tens Festival in 2009 will be held on the Gold Coast with thevnue being the Palm Beach Currumbin Rugby Club.
The
Tens Festival evolved as a result of the growing number of overseas
groups attending the Gold Coast event that were requesting extra
matches as part of extended tours.
Touring rugby groups
commonly consist of 24-30 players and the Tens has been extremely
popular because it allowed such groups to enter two (more
for even larger groups) teams, thus giving all players maximum
time on the playing field.
Teams can of course
participate in the Tens Festival without any association with
the Gold Coast event. Local teams participate for a modest
fee.
As is the case with the Canterbury
Gold Coast Coast Rugby Carnival, the Tens is endorsed by and
sanctioned by the Queensland Rugby Union.
